Montana Fly Fishing at The Stonefly Inn

The Stonefly Inn is located in Southwest Montana in the small town of Twin Bridges, Montana. Twin Bridges has become well known in fly fishing circles as the proving grounds of the R. L. Winston Fly Rod Company, as well as the geographic center of FIVE BLUE RIBBON trout rivers: The Big Hole, Madison, Beaverhead, Ruby, and the Jefferson. Many anglers consider Twin Bridges and the surrounding waters to be the center of Montana's Best Fly Fishing. Come visit us at The Stonefly Inn and find out for yourself what all the talk is about. Fly fish the Montana rivers that have inspired anglers like Zane Gray, Ernest Hemingway and Charles Kuralt. See first hand the rivers and the trout that have put Twin Bridges on the map!

For some obscure reason, a stranger to a stream rarely has any success at first. -Wise Fishing Encyclopedia 1952

We are officially underway and open for the season. Although things are a little hit and miss, the fishing certainly isnt bad. The weather is changing daily, one day its warm and sunny, and the next its snowing. Its a typical spring in the Rockies. Fishing is holding its own, with most of the action subsurface.

Remember, we welcome all travelers and fly fishermen throughout the season. Whether you are our guest for one night or one week, we will make you feel at home. Just call or email us to check availability.

Montana Fly Fishing - The early season "dry fly fix"in Missoula

Looking for a “dry fly fix” early this year? Look no further. Check out my good friend Joe Cummings at Classic Journey Outfitters in Missoula and his early season specials on the Clark Fork, Bitterroot and Blackfoot Rivers. The Skwala stonefly hatch will hit those rivers in late March and April. Give Joe a call at (877) 327-7878, and tell him Rooster sent you!

Spotlight: The Beaverhead River

Seen from the the air, she resembles a snake running northbound from Dillon through the valley to Twin Bridges. The famous Beaverhead River goes back to the days of the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1805. And it's loaded with trout.

"Some of the best dry fly fishing days I've ever witnessed in Montana have been out on the Beaverhead," says head guide and Stonefly Inn owner Dan "Rooster" Leavens. He'll also tell you that "the Beaverhead is home to some of Montana's largest brown trout, and they didn't get big and fat by being stupid." Just the ticket for those looking to hone their trout stalking skills during a day of fly fishing.
