07.03.09 - Happy Birthday Uncle Sam....
Montana Fly Fishing Report
It's pretty good around here these days. Here is the low down - straight from the guides of The Stonefly....
The Big Hole is about as easy as it gets. If you aren't catching lots, you are doing it wrong and need to take up another sport. One that involves less thought.
The Beaverhead is all over the map - flows should stabilize pretty soon and the fish will get happier. Why go there though when the Big Hole is in full pandamonium stage?
The Madison has salmonflies - and the river flow is up a bit from all the boats that put in at Varney today - hit the Rodeo tomorrow and fish the evening would be the call.
The Ruby is fishin' up by the Dam, but dirty as heck down low.
The Jefferson is getting close, might be a good bet for the guy that just wants a big one.
Here are some riverflow gauges to keep an eye on if you are headed this way.
BEAVERHEAD --- BIG HOLE --- JEFFERSON --- MADISON --- RUBY
One other website to check is the local weather for the Ruby Valley.
Until next time - see you on the river!

STEELHEAD FISHING IN FORKS, WA - THE "STEELHEAD CAPITAL OF THE WORLD"

WASHINGTON COASTAL STEELHEAD OLYMPIC PENINSULA
ROOSTER'S STEELHEAD GUIDES - FORKS, WA. Washingtons' Olympic Peninsula is home to five of the west coasts greatest steelhead rivers, and is perhaps one of the last strongholds of the native steelhead. The Hoh, The Bogachiel, The Calawah, The Sol Duc and the Dickey Rivers all have great runs of fish, and are well within a short drive from Forks. Having spent most of the last 20 winters chasing steel, Rooster still maintains a guide service in Forks during the peak of the run in February, March and April each year. Dates are limited and fill fast as the season is so short. Interested in getting in on some of the action? Send us an email and ask about our winter fisheries. Check our fishing reports and photogallery for up to date river conditions and fishing reports from the coast.

OUR MONTANA FLY FISHING SEASONSA quick recap of the months that we fly fish here in Montana, including some brief hatch info that occurs during each season. |
John Lauer wrote and told us:
"On behalf of JT and myself, I would like to thank you ALL for the fabulous Montana fly fishing vacation we enjoyed with you these past 4 days. You all played a significant role in making our stay and fishing a vacation we will remember always.
Nate, Thank you for your hospitality, grilling those awesome steaks and teaching us "Shaky Box". We were never hungry, thirsty or bored. You went out of your way to ensure we felt at home. You did an excellent job filling in for Rooster!
Janet, Thank you for sharing your cooking talents with us and making us feel at home in your kitchen. The food was superb!
Gary, Thanks for putting us onto ALL of those great Rainbows and Browns and teaching us how to catch them. You also were able to sneak up on some Moose and Mule Deer for some added fun. JT has already tied some of those "not available in the local fly shop bugs" that you had. That was probably the most fun day we have ever had fly fishing, and really was what we imagined Montana Fly Fishing to be like.
Brett, Thanks for being the hardest working fly fishing guide we have ever had the pleasure to fish with. Your passion for fly fishing is obvious and contagious. We caught big fish on streamers, nymphs and top water thanks to you. Your energy and patience is amazing! You taught us some skills and terminology (i.e. MONEY!! & EAT IT!!) that we will use for many years to come. I wake up in the middle of the night hearing "mend that line!". You are a great guide and a great guy.
Rooster, Thanks for putting together a winning team and an atmosphere that is as relaxed and friendly as could possibly be expected for the price we paid."
