Virgina City is
a well perserved ghost-town with a population of 150 or
so residents, located to the south about 25 miles to the
southaway. Virginia City seems to have been frozen in time,
sitting high in the Rocky Mountains in a bowl along Alder
Gulch, where gold was first discovered in 1863, during
the Civil War. Within a year the town grew to over 10,000
and became the Territorial Capital in 1865. Today, Virginia
City, Montana's main street provides an exceptional example
of commercial architecture from the later eighteen hundreds.
Many of the original structures are filled with original
artifacts. The buildings are both historic and architecturally
significant, especially for the Victorian era. Take one
of the several tours available and visit. It is like stepping
back in time. and visit them. This is cultural tourism
at its best.
Dillon, Montana is also
nearby, and has some historical implications and landmarks
as to the beginnings of the wild west. The nearest one,
Bannack, Montana, is a short distance west of Dillon, Montana
just off Route Montana 278. Bannack was the first great
gold rush in Montana. It was first Bannock, Dakota Territory,
then Bannack, Idaho Territory and now it is Bannack, Montana.
If you go further to the northwest you will come to the
Big Hole Battlefield. This was the site of one of greatest
Indian massacres in history, when our U.S. Calvary troops
killed women, children and old men in 1877, Chief Joseph's
war. There are reenactments at that site.

One of the most beautiful
National Parks, Yellowstone National Park,
is located about 120 miles to the south.
